Identification Methods


There are various methods for identifying gifted and talented mathematics students. This page lists some of these methods, to explore them in more depth click the links below.

It is important when examining these methods one needs to keep some simple principles of identification in mind, and to consider their effectiveness in identifying hidden gifted students, and in particular those of Mäori descent.

Standardised tests


Tests set on a national or international level are know as standardised.

Teacher-made tests


Tests composed by a classroom teacher for an individual class, or set of classes at a school.

Teacher nomination


Teachers select students to nominate based on observation.

Peer nomination


Other students select students to nominate.

Self-nomination


Students choose to nominate themselves for a gifted program.

Parent nomination


Parents may be asked to nominate ther own children

Portfolio assessment


Students may submit a portfolio of their best work.
